About

Adrian Markey | Chartered Accountants is a small practice based in Warrenpoint, Co. Down, just outside Newry on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic. We act for clients across the UK and the island of Ireland — from sole traders and contractors through to small limited companies in a wide range of sectors.

How we work

Day-to-day client work is handled by our team of Chartered Accountants, Accounting Technicians and trainees. Each client is matched with the team member best suited to their work, and the engagement is scaled to fit — some clients work with us continuously across bookkeeping, management accounts, tax compliance and ongoing advice; others see us once a year for compliance work and the occasional ad-hoc question. There’s no fixed package and no off-the-shelf service tier. The right level of involvement is whatever actually works for the business.

Founded in 2016

The firm was founded by Adrian Markey FCA FIATI in 2016. Adrian qualified as an Accounting Technician in 2010 and as a Chartered Accountant in 2013, working in private practice in Newry before setting up the firm. In 2017 we were nominated for the Accounting Excellence New Firm of the Year award, and in 2018 for the Practice Pioneer award — both recognising the firm’s use of cloud accounting and proactive client service in a sector that was still largely traditional at the time.

Cross-border taxation

Our specialism is cross-border taxation across the island of Ireland. The Warrenpoint office sits within sight of the border, and a meaningful proportion of our client work involves the tax treatment of income and operations on both sides — Northern Ireland residents working in the Republic, ROI residents who are directors of UK companies, contractors with clients on both sides of the border, and the residency and double-taxation-treaty questions that follow.

Technology and AI

We’re an unusually tech-led practice for our size. AI and automation are central to how we run our own work, and we help clients bring the same tools into their own businesses — from finance-function automation (bank feeds, document capture, reconciliation, reporting) through to building lightweight apps and workflows for specific operational problems. Most small businesses know AI and automation could help; the harder question is where to start. Because we already use these tools day-to-day, we can advise on what’s worth doing, what’s premature, and how to introduce changes without breaking what’s already working.

Companies House identity verification

The firm is also an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), registered with Companies House to carry out identity verification for company directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs). This sits alongside our general company secretarial work for limited company clients.

Sectors we work across

Beyond cross-border specialism, the firm works across a wide range of sectors — including consultancy, hospitality and catering, manufacturing, retail, health and beauty, IT, fashion and apparel, fitness, events management, construction and farming. Most modern small businesses use the same cloud accounting tools and face the same compliance frameworks regardless of industry, so sector experience matters less than it once did — but there’s still value in not having to explain your business to your accountant, and we’ve built a working understanding of the rhythms and quirks of most of the sectors we serve.

Background and credentials

Adrian has been featured in national press — including Bloomberg, the Daily Express and ICO Examiner — for early work on the taxation of cryptocurrency and blockchain applications. The firm continues to look after existing cryptocurrency clients, but this isn’t a service area we’re actively growing for new enquiries.
